The campaign

The “Run for a Cause” initiative is the official charity fundraising campaign of the Great Ethiopian Run 10km. Created to connect sport with social impact, the campaign encourages runners, partners, and supporters to raise funds and awareness for charitable organizations across Ethiopia. Over the past 20 years RUN FOR A CAUSE has been successful in raising funds and awareness on behalf of more than 60 organisations working with children, women, people with disabilities, and vulnerable communities. In total more than 50 million ETB has been raised through our campaign with a total of 4 million ETB in the 2025 campaign. Founded under the vision of Haile Gebrselassie, the campaign continues to use the power of running to create a lasting impact in the community beyond race day.

Alemfre Pink House Cancer Foundation (APCF)

Established in Atlanta, GA in 2012 by Frehiwot Derso in memory of her sister Alemtsehay Derso who passed away from breast cancer in May 2011, APCF is a non-profit tax-exempt foundation, dedicated to help Ethiopian women, who have been affected by cancer. Women in Ethiopia afflicted by cancer face many challenges, not least the funds to give them access to screenings, diagnosis and treatment particularly for breast and cervical cancer. APCF is devoted to supporting these women by increasing awareness about breast and cervical cancer and other diseases associated with cancer.

The women who receive support from APCF are part of a breast cancer awareness intervention which reduces mortality rates of breast cancer patients in Ethiopia. APCF provides financial, nutritional, emotional, psycho-social and transport support to women during their cancer treatment. The support is given from two Pink House locations in Addis Ababa and Gondar.

Marefia Elder Care and Support

Established in 2007, Marefia Elder Care and Support is an indigenous, non-profit Ethiopian grassroots organization committed to improving the lives of senior citizens and their families by providing basic needs support, medical care, educational materials and financial support to help both the elderly people and the grandchildren under their care. Typically, these children have lost their parents so the responsibility of care has passed to the grandparents. The work is focussed in rural areas of Ethiopia where instability in the region has disrupted education, leaving many children without access to learning and exposed to long-term psychosocial distress.

To address this urgent need, Marefia is working to establish a Community Learning and Intergenerational Support Center in an area of the Amhara Region of Ethiopia with the aim of restoring restore learning opportunities, supporting teachers, and provide a safe space for the children and their caregivers.
